Alvin Plantinga has remodelled an older argument (see especially CS Lewis’s Miracles) in his ‘Evolutionary Argument Against Naturalism’. The gist is that you fall into contradiction if you believe both evolution and naturalism (that the natural world is all there is). This of course is what the new atheists do believe. Why does he say this? He says that evolution and naturalism combined do not give us good reason to believe that the human mind is capable of grasping truth and arriving at scientific knowledge. Hence it would be wrong to think that we are right if we hold naturalism to be true. In fact we can’t trust any of our so called knowledge. It’s a shooting yourself in the foot argument. The gist is given here by Plantinga.
