My school’s motto all those years back was Spectemur Agendo: ‘let us be judged by our acts.’ As a Christian I’ve held out hopes for Kevin Rudd, the man who loves Bonhoeffer and seems to profess faith. But no matter how hard I try, things just don’t add up. So now we have a choice between two parties that are both led by professing Christians and in both cases they seem to be little people strutting and fretting their hour upon the stage and signifying a low time in Australian politics. Where are the statesmen and women and people of convictions that don’t bend in the wind at the hint of a poll? This article charts the current PM’s extraordinary understanding of honour and keeping his word. Whatever one thinks of her or Labor, perhaps Julia deserves a medal.
