The heretic

I have just read an excellent and lucid article that is a ‘must read’ for anyone who wants to understand our times. Wherever you are on the belief/non-belief spectrum it’s for you.

IMHO there are three worldviews competing in the global marketplace of ideas. The tensions between them will define the 21st century. Islam is one. The (Judeo-) Christian worldview is another. The third is naturalism.

This article in the Weekly Standard, called “The Heretic”, takes Thomas Nagel’s bombshell book as the centrepiece for a very readable discussion of naturalism. I’ve made various references to Nagel’s book in the past—it’s Mind and Cosmos: Why the Materialist Neo-Darwinian Conception of Nature Is Almost Certainly False. And if you’ve forgotten, the reason it’s such a bombshell is because Nagel is an atheist and he is (was?) also widely respected as an absolutely world-class philosopher.

The article is long; it will take you half an hour to read properly, an hour to digest. So print it now and read with care once or twice or three times at your leisure.

Why is it so important? See the second paragraph above.

And might I suggest, humbly again, that you pass this one around—share it, like it, tweet it, whatever. The issues really, really matter because they undergird all our ways of thinking and acting, and they will mark this century. Enough talk—the article explains it. Go read.

(If perchance the article disappears behind a paywall, I have a copy; just ask.)
